'It is good people who make good places.'~ Anna Sewell
The essence of things ~ true reflections of people, places and purpose ~ is what it's all about.
Promoting local business, people and events is a rewarding part of life in a close-knit community, surrounded by the magnificent Midlands Meander and the Drakensberg mountains.
Between the peaceful scenery and lovely townsfolk are many moments of sheer appreciation, and I undertake numerous pro bono projects as service for my rent here on Earth.
THE LOVE HOWICK / RENOVERGE PROJECT:
This initiative is a constant source of inspiration and goodwill in the KwaZulu-Natal community, where volunteers from all walks of life regularly donate their time, hard work and humour to uplift the town and its people.
Current events allow us to see the best in people. Our Howick community rallied in every way to support and uplift those most impacted by looting and riots, cleaning away destruction in powerful solidarity.
It was an enormous honour and privilege to be selected among these Wonderful Women of Howick during August 2020's Women's Month celebrations. Acknowledged for their hard work and tireless efforts in the service of our town, these ladies were treated to accolades and gift vouchers over coffee and cake.
During Covid-19 Lockdown the Hunger Busters initiative was a literal God-send to Howick's poorest community members.
In the words of Ross Heyns, 'We must treasure what we have.' This includes the caring folk who give of their time and expertise to create and maintain sustainable local ecosystems.
Local markets brimming with talent, tastes and colours showcase the pride of the Midlands.
The Dream Centre was launched in our town to combat poverty and unemployment in the greater Howick area.
The Love Howick NPO added an innovative education and training centre to empower the region, adopting the successful Siya Sebenza, Work for a Living training programme, strongly focused on internships and mentoring.
To date the majority of the course graduates have obtained sustainable employment in the area.
The FOSHIM fundraiser held at the Howick Golf Club is always a well-supported success, with necessary funds raised towards a wheelchair-friendly vehicle for the residents of Sunfield Home.
Supporting local schools at fundraising is undertaken seriously in a bid to extract the most fun!
The annual May Day fair held at Sunfield Home for the Intellectually Impaired is a treat for both residents and locals alike.
Friends of Riders for the Disabled showcase the remarkable skills patiently learned for months before the Big Day, while the organic market and talented entertainment attract many visitors to this landmark event.
This uplifting initiative by Minority Skate Co. involved the local youth in a clean-up of Alex Park in PMB, used by all kinds of wheel experts in the spirit of good, clean fun.
The colourful antics and camaraderie across all social strata were a delight to record, and their talents are jaw-dropping!
The annual Out On A Limb Blanket Run draws motorcycle clubs from all over the province to deliver warm blankets and goodies to the less privileged before winter.
The generosity and kindness of the bikers brought such joy and excitement to the older folk, and some fond memories of riding in their youth.
The GLSA gives generously to worthy causes like Thandi House, a Place of Safety in Pietermaritzburg. The gift of 50kg of fortified maize porridge helps to nourish the 21 children currently in Mark and Rene Morcom's home.
Falling under the auspices of the Department of Justice, they have literally seen humanity at its most vulnerable. Their life-saving Baby Safe for abandoned and/or abused babies is installed in a city church.

This brave gentleman is a traffic cop who lost his leg in an horrific accident pulling over a speeding driver. Here's the first time Sizwe climbed on a motorcycle since becoming an amputee a few years ago.
Together with his legless instructor Bushy McKelvey, both closure and brotherhood were tearfully shared.
